Qynce B. ChumleyÕs debut graphic novel Glued in Place follows Cramsey: a raccoon whoÕs finally just got their degree after four grueling years. The plan had been grad school next, but they find themself burnt out and sick of academia. Unsure of what to do and longing for familiarity, they move back to their rural hometown and their brother Buddy gets them a gig installing carpet. Their new co-workers have never heard the word ÔnonbinaryÕ and the only thing theyÕre more confused about than CramseyÕs gender is why somebody with a math degree would ever choose to spend their time pulling up carpets.~|~~|~QynceÕs cartooning is inventive and so much fun to read. Glued in Place is a patient comic, allowing small moments, jokes, and deeply emotional scenes to take as much space as they need on the page. At the heart of this book is the complicated emotions of Cramsey, and the ambiguous relationships they have with their family and coworkers. Every character is well developed, flawed, and sympathetic, even the jerks.
